For Italy (including Rome), there are three associated plug types: C, F and L.

Type C: Two round pins.

Type F: Two round pins with grounding clips.

Type L: Three round pins in a straight line.

Italy operates on a 230V supply voltage and 50Hz frequency. Most modern hotels also support Type C and Type F plugs.

If you are carrying prescription medication into Italy:

Rome is served by two international airports:

Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport (FCO)

Rome’s main international airport and Italy’s busiest.

Located approximately 30 km southwest of the city center.

Connected to Rome by the Leonardo Express train, regional trains, buses, taxis, and private transfers.

Ciampino Airport (CIA)

Located approximately 15 km southeast of central Rome.

Primarily serves low-cost and charter airlines.

Connected to the city by shuttle buses, taxis, and local public transport.

Roma Termini Railway Station is the main railway station in Rome and the busiest in Italy. Located in the city center at Piazza dei Cinquecento, it is the primary hub for national and international rail services, including high-speed trains connecting Rome with cities such as Milan, Florence, Naples, Venice, and Turin. It is also well connected to Rome Metro Lines A and B, numerous bus routes, and the Leonardo Express train to Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport. Around 850 trains serve the station each day. 

Rome has an extensive public transportation network operated primarily by ATAC. The main options include:

Metro (Subway) – Three metro lines (A, B/B1, and C).

Buses – Extensive citywide bus network.

Trams – Several tram routes connecting key districts.

Urban Rail Lines – Local commuter trains within the city.

Taxis – Official white taxis available throughout Rome.

Ride-hailing services – Apps such as Free Now and Uber (limited services) are available.

A single ticket is generally valid across buses, trams, metro, and eligible urban rail services within Rome for the specified validity period.

Italy is part of the Schengen Area.

Citizens of many countries may enter Italy visa-free for short tourist stays (typically up to 90 days within any 180-day period).

Travelers who require a visa must obtain a Schengen Visa before arrival.

Visitors should ensure they have:

A passport valid for the required period.

Proof of onward or return travel.

Evidence of sufficient financial means.

Accommodation details if requested.

Getting around Rome is easy with several alternatives:

Official white taxis available at designated taxi ranks.

Taxi apps such as Free Now and itTaxi.

Electric scooters available through various sharing services.

Bicycle and e-bike rentals.

Walking is one of the best ways to explore Rome’s historic center, where many major attractions are within walking distance.

Car-sharing services are also available, although driving in the historic center is generally not recommended due to traffic and restricted traffic zones (ZTL).
